The film builds on a chapter from Bram Stoker’s 1897 novel and begins with a boat laden with a mysterious cargo in search of extra powers for the journey ahead. There’s something almost comical about how often the film offers hints of foreboding, with supporting character after supporting character practically screaming that evil will soon be brought aboard the ship, rather than clearly predicting the dangers with which the story begins. As Dracula starts using this information to play with them, turning it into the deadliest knock-knock game ever made, the film begins to search for something funnier to empathize with. It’s not just the murders that are suitably gruesome, even if oddly suspenseful, but also the more playful undertones that lurk beneath. Dracula is not a mindless monster and is great fun to watch as he plays with his food.

In the end, even the climax confrontation becomes less intense than before. Without giving away what’s going on, there is one key element that would have been far more chilling if the film had stopped for a moment. Instead, we’re one step ahead of the characters and don’t feel the fear they feel when death strikes them. The film is billed as an “alien-style horror film,” which may be true in the abstract, but the execution falls short. The experience fundamentally lacks potency, leading to the final teaser of a possible sequel feeling more silly than scary. As much as Botet and his colleagues put their heart and soul into breathing life into it, the film is always shaped not only by the death of its characters, but also by creativity.
